Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), privately controlled coeducational institution of upper learning. It is famous for its scientific and technological training and research. it had been chartered by the state of Massachusetts in 1861 and has become a land-grant college in 1863. William Barton Rogers is the founder, and the first president of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, had worked for years to arrange an establishment of upper learning devoted entirely to scientific and technical training, but the outbreak of the American war delayed the opening of the varsity until 1865 when 15 students enrolled for the primary classes, held in Boston. Massachusetts Institute of Technology moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1916; its campus is found along with the Charles.

Under the administration of president Karl T. Compton (1930–48), the institute evolved from a well-regarded tech into an internationally known center for scientific and technical research. During a number of fields, its faculty established prominent research centers most notably analog computing (led by Vannevar Bush) and aeronautics (led by Charles Stark Draper) During the good Depression. Massachusetts Institute of Technology administered the Radiation Laboratory during war II, which had become the nation’s leading center for radar research and development, also as other military laboratories. MIT continued to take care of strong ties after the war, with company patrons, and military they supported basic and applied research within the physical sciences, computing, aerospace, and engineering.

Massachusetts offers both graduate and undergraduate education. There are five academic schools—the School of Architecture and Planning, the varsity of Engineering, the varsity of Humanities, Arts, and science, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management, and therefore the School of Science—and the Whitaker College of Health Sciences and Technology. When Massachusetts Institute of Technology is probably best known for its programs in engineering and therefore the physical sciences, other areas—economics, politics, urban studies, linguistics, and philosophy—are also strong. Admission is extremely competitive, and undergraduate students are often ready to pursue their own original research. Total enrollment is about 10,000.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology has numerous research centers and laboratories. Among its facilities is a computation center a reactor, geophysical and astrophysical observatories, an area research center, a linac, wind tunnels, a man-made intelligence laboratory, a center for science, and a world studies center. MIT’s library system is very extensive and includes a variety of specialized libraries. There also are several museums.


Current research and education areas include nanotechnology; digital learning; the environment, climate adaptation, and global water and food security;  sustainable energy, Big Data, robotics, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence; human health, including cancer, autism,  HIV,  Alzheimer’s, and dyslexia; biological engineering and CRISPR technology; poverty alleviation; advanced manufacturing; and innovation and entrepreneurship.
